@Dtraslerwriting @cstross Why would they be desperate to AVOID it happening again? The ones who caused it to happen made out like bandits. (Actually way better than any bandits.)
The ones to blame got billions in bailouts. While shafting everyone else.
From the point of view of the extremely wealthy, both of those are wins.
So of course they're going to want to repeat it again and again as often as they can.
@isaackuo @Dtraslerwriting Absolutely this. 2008 was in hindsight the first test-run of disaster capitalism at home in the first-world leading economies. Led to austerity, mafia-style bust-outs, socializing losses and privatizing profits, and all the rest of our current malaise. History will mark it as the beginning of the end of the western system's ascendancy.
As could be expected, data centres are becoming war targets. Yandex is an essential part of the Russian internet and also runs meal delivery and taxis.
There's undoubtedly grounds to label it as a military target, but - like with the refineries - it will help in making Russians feel the war too.

@UlrikeHahn Thank you for your essay! It feels right to me, the different modes of engagement are important. However, I think that they are not necessarily distinctive features. A politician can be successful by using the scientific mode of engagement and consider all evidence, and a "scientist" may bulldoze competitors (Lysenko). The key difference seems to be what counts as success: power in politics and knowledge in science. These two different aims are of course not independent of the two modes of engagement. This is true especially at a time of increasing political polarization, when the tension that you discuss in your essay matters a lot and politicians are tempted to gain power by deviating from the scientific mode of engagement.
My feeling is that the whole system becomes unsustainable if politics deviates too much from what is known. Producing good science and infusing the public discourse with good science then seems to be useful.
I have tagged this post as my opinion. This is not really a solution to the problems addressed towards the end of your essay, but it may help to convey that this post lacks scientific rigor. I am confused as well.
@Daniel_Hoffmann Daniel, thanks for these thoughts! and, yes, reconciliation of the two is possible in as much as the “maximalist” option whereby we make our political action more compatible with a ‘scientific’ mode of engagement is available
and your example of Lysenko is a well-chosen one because one place we need the distinction is the weaponisation of science, and increasingly pseudo-science, which requires not just political actors but also scientific accomplices (and that has very much been part of my thoughts), so strong agree there!
the only bit where I would maybe slightly diverge is that I might replace ‘power’ with ‘influence’ or an even more neutral term, just because I think we can fail in this tension (‘knowledge’ vs. ‘power’) when (and because) we are trying to do good (i.e., it’s an outcome we are trying to empower not necessarily ourselves).

I was in a choir that sang this. Tremendous fun, but the bases get maybe four notes for most of it (not always the same for each movement).
Unlike that accursed Bach Cantata where we got a page and a half of semiquavers wandering all over (and above and below) the stave on a single syllable.

Well... crap. The path to enshittification is now set. If it isn't forked already, someone better do so now.
How have we as a society gotten to the point where we’ve complicated the act of disposal of rubbish enough that it seemingly requires a master’s degree to understand which bit goes in which bag or bin in every home, let alone the variations per district or country?
My kid today: “taxis are insane, they’re like Ubers you don’t need an app for”
@Daojoan I’m yet to find a taxi company that doesn’t use an app similar to Uber nowadays (except the hyenas). Also, due to regulations, Uber essentially became a taxi company, at least in Europe.
Day 3 of #ossym brought us a keynote by Aline Blankertz from Structural Integrity on: “Sovereignty for whom? The politics of breaking with dependencies in search”
Aline stated that openness leads to more dependencies, especially in the face of AI.
"Search is getting harder, depends on open web, but becomes less diverse because of AI!"
She found:
-Search gets worse as AI proliferates
-Openness does litte to halt this
-Politics of sovereignties is deepening dependencies on AI

Ça, c'est un article satirique du faux journal "The Onion" publié il y a 6 mois sur les USA qui décident de rendre les exécutions publiques, et d'utiliser un peloton d'exécution au lieu des injections léthales pour rendre ça "plus fun".
